Belfry

by Jinjoo Yang

LOCATION: SEOUL, SOUTH KOREA

Belfry is a kinetic installation that transforms constructed surroundings into sound-playing art. The installation site is a former crude oil storage tank in Seoul that was built during the 1970’s oil crisis. As the amount of oil consumption increased with the growing economy, a much larger reservoir was built outside of the city and the oil tanks have been transformed into public spaces. Belfry consists of eight motorized hammers installed in the space where thick steel panels of the oil tank were dismantled and reinstalled. Each unit comprises a motor, steel mount, and polyurethane hammer with an aluminum handle. The steel panels of the original tank were deformed during the process of reconstruction such that each hammer strike creates a unique tone.
